2020 Brings Some Good News For Dr. Rajan Mahtani, Retains Ownership Of Portland Cement

The year 2020 has not been great. Perhaps, it can be said that the year has been the worst in the past 100 years due to the ongoing global pandemic that has not only claimed millions of life but has brought the global economy to a standstill. Almost every nation across this globe has suffered and Zambia could not escape this pandemic. While the blow has not been as severe as some of the more developed nations, it still resulted in significant loss of life and life savings for many. In terms of businesses too, many companies suffered due to economic volatility and loss of international trade. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted businessman and philanthropist in Zambia with several successful businesses such as Mahtani Group of Companies, Finsbury Investments and Portland Cement Zambia. Even he faced issues due to this global pandemic which resulted in loss of revenues and profitability for his organizations and ventures.

However, one of the positive aspects which happened to Dr. Rajan Mahtani during the later part of the year was a surprise move from his arch enemies the Ventriglias. It is a known fact that Dr. Rajan Mahtani, who now owns the Portland Cement Zambia factory, fought for the legal ownership of the factory for more than a decade. First it was Lusaka High Court given a misdirected decision, then higher Court of Appeal reversing the decision from the higher Court of Appeal and giving majority shareholding and legal ownership to Dr. Rajan Mahtani. After more than a year of the Court of Appeal decision, the Ventriglias approached the Supreme Court with a new claim challenging the Court of Appeal’s decision. However, the Supreme Court Zambia effectively rejected this appeal as according to law any appeal against a previous court decision must be made within 14 days of the judgement. Since the Ventriglias were more than a year late, the Supreme Court Zambia rejected their appeal and announced that the factory belongs to Dr. Rajan Mahtani only.

Zambezi Portland Cement’s legal owner is Dr. Rajan Mahtani, confirms Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal finally reveals the criminal and unethical intentions and gives proper justice to the long awaited Zambezi Portland Cement case. The case pertains to a cement-manufacturing factory which was being contested by two major business parties in Zambia. One of them is Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, a noted businessman, philanthropist and charity worker from Zambia. He is known for several successful business ventures both within the nation as well as outside the nation such as in United Kingdom. On the other hand, the second contesting party was the Ventriglias, an infamous Italian family residing in Zambia. Dr. Rajan Mahtani claimed that the factory, Zambezi Portland Cement, belonged to him and was forcefully taken away from him. After this, a case was registered as the Lusaka High Court where it went for more than ten years. During this time, Dr. Rajan Mahtani shared numerous evidences such as signed shareholders agreement, financial reports as well as independent audit report conducted by an independent auditor which clearly stated that the factory was established as a joint venture partnership and Dr. Rajan Mahtani was the sole joint venture owner of the factory. Despite these strong evidences, the final judgement by the Lusaka High Court judge was given against Dr. Mahtani’s claimed. As per Justice Nkonde, judge from the Lusaka High Court, Ventriglias were only shareholders of the Zambezi Portland. However, this judgement was condemned publicly and Dr. Mahtani was forced to make another appeal to the Court of Appeal.

Dr. Rajan Mahtani

The judgement at Court of Appeal also revealed that the judge below him was wrong in declaring Ventriglias as majority shareholders without evidence. As per the latest judgement, Dr. Rajan Mahtani owned Finsbury Investments owns 58 percent shares and is majority shareholder of Zambezi Portland. On the other hand, Ventriglias owned Ital Terrazzo Limited owns 42 percent shares and is minority shareholder of the Zambezi Portland. This gives legal ownership over the factory to Dr. Rajan Mahtani.
