The Foreign Investment Network (FIN) and Forbes jointly present the “Best of Africa” awards, which honor individuals for their achievements in philanthropy, management, and innovation. Dr. Rajan Mahtani received the “Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year” award in 2021 for his significant achievements in reshaping Zambia’s banking sector. The award ceremony was conducted quickly, and YouTube Medium was used to broadcast the event worldwide. Dr. Rajan Mahtani was admired for his benevolent and philanthropic efforts to Zambia and its people in addition to his contributions to the banking sector. Two of his major philanthropic achievements have been the Stephen Malama prize and scholarship for top law graduates in Zambia and the founding of Prison Fellowship Zambia (PFZ) for the welfare of prisoners and their families are two of his long-standing initiatives. In this regard, Dr.Rajan Mahtani has vowed to support the president of Zambia’s proclamation wholeheartedly. President Hakainde announced his plans to entirely abolish the death penalty on the special occasion of Africa Day. Dr. Rajan Mahtani agreed with the Zambian President’s decision, stating that the death penalty is cruel, ruthless, and degrading. He also pledged that his organization, Prison Fellowship Zambia (PFZ), will provide full legal and regulatory support for the President’s decision.
Dr.Rajan Mahtani emphasized that the majority of countries around the world have abolished the death penalty laws, and African countries are also doing the same. While previous presidents of Zambia have abstained from the death penalty by granting mercy privileges, none of them have had a firm and long-term stance on the matter. Dr. Rajan Mahtani also brought attention to the appalling conditions of Zambian jails, where inmates frequently lack basic human rights and dignity. As a result, the Zambian Government started the initiative of strategic decongestion of prisoners. As a result, these inmates have no relevance to the idea of the death sentence. As a result, Dr. Mahtani praised President Hakainde Hichilema for his audacious yet crucial announcement.
