In a shocking incident, various top lawyers from prominent law firms in Zambia have been accused of money laundering activities. This revelation has certainly brought the nation at a halt. Citizens are in shock and industrialists have heavily condemned the individuals caught in the act. Noted industrialists such as Dr. Rajan Mahtani have demanded strict actions against these culprits. The activities were investigated and unearthed by a noted agency FIC (Financial Intelligence Agency). As per the agency, this investigation took new turn when suspicious and high amount of cash transactions worth almost USD 1 billion were recorded. In a matter of two weeks, more than 35,000 transactions were noted.
These transactions were majority linked to the corporate as well as the individual bank accounts of many top lawyers. It was also found that majority of these activities were highly active during fraudulent elections, during presidential petition and similar activities. From these facts, it is clear that the laundered money is used for illegal and unethical activities. FIC also reported that more than 50 percent of these companies investigated that received government contracts were not even tax registered. Many others belonged to individuals exposed to political misconduct or crimes and were being operated by using surrogates. This clearly indicates the misuse of power and position by top officials in the Zambian government.
Some of the legal firms and agency that are found to be holding high quantity of suspicious funds include Central Chambers, Makebi Zulu and Shamwana & Company. The involvement goes high up to former ministers such as Ex-Minister of the Presidential Affairs and Legal advisors in the government. Another fact to be noted here is that Central Chambers is owned by Sakwiba Sikota, the legal counsellor and long-term aide of the Ventriglias. The Ventriglias are known for their notorious activities and unethical practices and it is no surprise that Sakwiba Sikota’s name would appear in the list.
